He was thinking about her again.

Rain spilled down the brim of his hat, slipping into his coat. It dripped into puddles at his feet, gathering in his shoes. She was sure that he could feel the dampness in his bones; there were many rainy days when he commented on the cold.

He stood there, motionless, looking at something only he could see. Perhaps the past, maybe a hallucination. She felt so very small and alone, for even though he was standing right in front of her he was a million miles away.

She let the rain fall on her as well, hoping that she would be able to understand him a little bit better if she did. It trailed down her cheeks, tracing the tears that he couldn't cry.

All at once, the steady rhythm of the rain on her shoulders came to a stop. She looked at him, holding out his hand and drying her off with a warm breeze.

"You'll get sick," was all he said, and then she was dry and he turned away from her again.

She tried to will the rain back on herself, but he was keeping it away from her and she should've practiced her elemental magic more, so she gave up and let him be.

"Skulduggery," she said quietly, though she was sure that he would hear her. "What is it?"

He didn't reply, and she didn't expect him to. But it hurt a little, to be reminded that she hadn't been his first partner.

Suddenly, it all felt wrong, like she oughtn't be there. She was intruding on something private and personal, maybe even intimate.

"I'll be in the Bentley," she choked out, before breaking into a run.
